Report of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2023 Observed on 14th Sept
Dr. Linge Gowda K.B., Vice Chancellor, SSAHE He congratulated the HoD for observing World Suicide Prevention Day and encouraged the department to continue the good work in observing the days of national importance.
Dr. M.Z. Kurian, Registrar, SSAHE; Inaugurated the program by watering the Holy basil plant and spoke on the importance of World Suicide Prevention Day and stressed on the key role of stressors and coping strategies to deal with them.
Dr. Mallikarjun B. Sanikop, Principal, SSMCH; The Principal greeted and congratulated the Dept. of Psychiatry and the HoD, Prof. Dr. Sathyanarayana M.T. for continued efforts to raise awareness about mental health by observing days of national importance.
Dr. N.S. Venkatesh, Medical Superintendent, SSMCH; He elaborated on the ways we can help prevent suicide by starting at home and paying attention to signs in friends and family members.
Dr. Kirankumar M., Chief Administrator Officer; He congratulated the HoD for the Psychiatry helpline and stressed on it as a need for the hour. Furthermore, he congratulated the Dept. of Psychiatry for not failing to observe World Suicide Prevention Day.
Invited Speaker: Prof. Dr. Kiran Kumar K., (Dept. of Psychiatry, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Bengaluru), dwelled on various issues concerning suicide like causes, types, data associated and preventive aspects. Though a serious social problem, good strategies, if employed suicide can be prevented

Concluding Remarks: Prof. Sathyanarayana M.T., HoD, Psychiatry, SSMC; spoke about the measures undertaken by him personally to create awareness among general public, students of schools & colleges of Tumkur district, faculty, medicos & nursing students for the last more than 24 years. In addition to “Stress, Time management,” even “Study skills” are being taught. A 24X7 Help Line (No. 80885 25339) has been working for the last 6 years
