Overview

Quality education is the foundation of technical excellence. In today’s competitive world, industries and research organizations require skilled engineers who are ready to work, adapt quickly, and meet future challenges. With its strong educational heritage, India is moving towards becoming a global knowledge hub. Sri Siddhartha Institute of Technology (SSIT), Tumkur, Karnataka, is committed to providing quality education and effective skill development, shaping competent engineers who contribute to industry and society.

Sri Siddhartha Education Society was established in 1959 by Shri H. M. Gangadharaiah, with the blessings of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. What began with a single school has grown steadily into a large educational network with over 86 institutions spread across the southern region of Karnataka. The Society’s academic institutions include two Engineering Institute, and two Medical Colleges & Research centre, Dental College, Nursing College, First Grade Colleges, B.Ed. College, Industrial Training Institutes, Sanskrit, Polytechnic Schools, as well as several high schools. With a strong vision of taking education to the unreached, the Society remains committed to providing accessible and quality education at all levels.

Dr. H. M. Gangadharaiah, an art teacher by profession, was the visionary architect of this premier educational society. He was blessed by Mahatma Gandhi and Acharya Vinoba Bhave, whose ideals deeply influenced his life and work. Inspired by the thoughts of Vinoba Bhave, Dr. H. M Gangadharaiah received his heartfelt blessings: “May you be a dedicated social worker, and may this Gollahalli become a Shantiniketan. Let your honesty be a guiding light in all your efforts.” These words left a lasting impact on Dr. H. M Gangadharaiah and strengthened his resolve to provide education to the needy. With this noble vision, he established the Sri Siddhartha Education Society, named after the great philosopher Sri Gautama Buddha, to spread knowledge, values, and social upliftment through education.

Sri Siddhartha Institute of Technology (SSIT) was established in 1979 under the aegis of the Sri Siddhartha Education Society (SSES), Tumkur. Since its inception, the Institute has grown steadily and strengthened its academic offerings.

At present, SSIT offers 12 Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) programs, 7 Master of Technology (M.Tech) programs, Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs.

The Institution stands among the 14 technical institutions in Karnataka selected by the World Bank for financial assistance under both Phase I & Phase II of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). This support has enabled the Institution to enhance academic quality, strengthen research activities, establish Centers of Excellence, and improve postgraduate education. Several focused initiatives have already been implemented to create a positive and research-oriented learning environment.

The campus is well known for its strong infrastructure and modern facilities, which support effective teaching and learning. The Institution maintains active and purposeful collaborations with leading industries and reputed academic institutions. It has signed MoUs with prominent organizations such as Bosch (MICO), TATA, Infosys, PROSYM, and academic institutions including AIT, UVCE, MSRIT, and JNNCE, along with many others.

With the belief that learning goes beyond boundaries, the Institution has achieved a significant milestone by signing an MoU with St. Louis University, USA. This partnership enables student and faculty exchange programs under the Twinning Programme and is among the first of its kind in India. St. Louis University is a pioneer in education for the aircraft industry and is home to one of the world’s oldest pilot training programs. These global opportunities allow students to gain international exposure and broaden their academic and professional horizons.

A strong academic environment is created and sustained by a team of competent and dedicated faculty members who continuously work towards developing innovative curricula and meaningful co-curricular activities. The management and staff of the college work together with a shared commitment to advance the Institution, guided by the vision laid down by the founding father. A key strength of the Institution is the leadership, experience, and guidance of Dr. G. Parameshwara, Honourable Chancellor Sri Siddhartha Academy of Higher Education and Home minister Government of Karnataka. His vast experience in the field of education is a valuable asset that contributes significantly to the growth and academic excellence of the Institute.

The institution is actively engaged in several ongoing research projects funded by the Government of India and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). It also has a dedicated Consultancy Cell, through which expert solutions and technical support are provided to industries and local bodies, fostering strong industry–institute interaction.

Sports and Culture

A healthy body fosters a healthy mind, and the institute strongly believes that students achieve excellence when their physical and mental well-being are well nurtured. To promote fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship, the campus provides comprehensive facilities such as a multi-gym, football, volleyball, cricket, basketball, and a range of indoor sports and recreational activities. Our students have consistently demonstrated excellence at the university level, securing numerous medals and citations in sports and cultural events. With a diverse student community drawn from across the country, the institute actively fosters unity in diversity and promotes rich cultural harmony. To celebrate and showcase cultural values, the institute organizes an annual cultural festival, Kalotsava. Students also actively participate in university-level cultural festivals, earning accolades and bringing prestige and recognition to the institution through their remarkable performances.

Science and Technological Entrepreneurship Park – STEP

The college has been actively implementing STEP (Skill Training and Employment Promotion) activities, with programs like the Prime Minister Rojgar Yojana (PMRY) being executed effectively. In recognition of its outstanding community service and contribution to women’s development, the college has been honored by the Women Welfare Department and awarded the National “Bharatiya Rashtriya Vocational Excellence Award” for its exemplary efforts in promoting women empowerment.

The Grassroots Innovation & Augmentation Network Cell (GIAN-CELL) at our institute serves as a nodal centre for upgrading, designing, developing, and commercializing grassroots innovations in Karnataka. To date, over 30 innovations have been documented and evaluated across the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

The Mechanical Engineering Department has developed a bio-mass stove capable of cooking 1 kg of rice in 20 minutes using just 100 grams of wooden morsels. Tested in several villages, the stove is at the final stage of testing and launching, offering a sustainable solution to households. It emits minimal radiation, almost no soot or smoke, and also produces hot water for bathing and distilled water for drinking, making it a boon for housewives and rural communities.

Additionally, with technical support from the institute, a primary school teacher developed a milking machine that can milk 20 liters of milk in 5 minutes without causing discomfort to the animal or the operator. This innovation supports small dairy farmers, enhances productivity, and can be operated even by women. The machine is already commercially available, and the innovator was honored with a National Award from the President of India in 2004.

Through such initiatives, the institute actively assists rural innovators (Grassroots Innovators) in conceptualizing ideas, developing prototypes, and safeguarding intellectual property through IPR, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in the community.
